Financial Assistance Options for Families of Children with Special Needs

Raising a child with special needs often brings unique financial challenges, including costs for specialized medical care, therapy, and educational support. Fortunately, various government programs and private insurance options are available to assist families in managing these expenses. Speak to one of our Special Needs Certified Financial Planners® to determine your best options.

Government Assistance Programs

Several federal and state programs provide financial support to families with children who have disabilities:

Medicaid

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program offering health coverage to low-income individuals, including children with disabilities. It covers a wide range of services such as long-term care, home health services, and various therapies. Eligibility and specific benefits can vary by state.

Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)

CHIP provides health coverage for children in families with incomes too high to qualify for Medicaid but too low to afford private insurance. Benefits often include essential services for children with disabilities, similar to those offered by Medicaid.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

SSI is a federal program that offers monthly payments to children with disabilities from low-income families. Eligibility is determined based on the child's disability and family income. The funds can be used for medical expenses, educational needs, and other essential supports.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

SSDI primarily benefits disabled adults who have contributed to the Social Security system. However, children with disabilities may also receive SSDI benefits if a parent is disabled, retired, or deceased.

Individualized Education Program (IEP)

Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), public schools are required to provide free and appropriate education to students with disabilities. This includes developing an IEP tailored to each child’s unique needs, ensuring access to necessary educational resources and support services.

State-Specific Programs

Many states offer additional programs and benefits for families with children who have disabilities, such as respite care, financial assistance, and specialized health services. These programs vary widely, so it's essential for parents to research and connect with local agencies to understand the full range of available resources. A Certified Special Needs Certified Financial Planners® can assist in locating these services.

Private Insurance Options

For families not qualifying for government assistance, private insurance through employers or individual plans can provide necessary support:

Employer-Sponsored Insurance

Many employers offer health insurance plans that include coverage for medical services, therapies, and sometimes specialized equipment for children with disabilities. Reviewing the plan details is crucial to understand the extent of coverage.

Individual Health Insurance Plans

For those without access to employer-sponsored insurance, individual health plans purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace are an option. These plans are required to cover essential health benefits, including services important for children with disabilities, such as prescription drugs, mental health services, and rehabilitative services.

Navigating the financial aspects of raising a child with special needs can be complex. However, by leveraging available government programs and private insurance options, families can access the necessary resources to support their children's health and development.
